MIAMI – Florida International University is creating a database of fluent Haitian Creole speakers willing to volunteer their time to help with a number of ongoing efforts to support South Florida’s Haitian community in the aftermath of the earthquake that devastated Haiti last month.

Interpreters are needed right away to assist the College of Law’s Carlos A. Costa Immigration and Human Rights Clinic as it helps Haitian immigrants apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). FIU also is responding to a number of requests from its community partners who need Creole interpreters.

This need became evident during the first meeting of the FIU Haiti Relief Task Force, a group of leaders from around the university brought together by FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg for the purpose of coordinating the short, mid- and long-term efforts of the university in response to the Haiti disaster.

Throughout FIU, various departments are identifying and harnessing the knowledge and skills of faculty, staff and students to address the medical, infrastructure and other relief and recovery needs for Haiti. FIU also is committed to assisting its students with ties to Haiti who are experiencing hardship as a result of the earthquake.

The task force’s chairwoman and coordinator, Senior Vice President for External Relations Sandra Gonzalez-Levy, said she was impressed with the number of efforts already under way and wants to support them by creating a centralized database of Creole speakers that can be called upon to assist on different projects over the next few weeks and months.

“We have a very generous university community that wants to help, including eager students who were quick to respond to the call for relief” Gonzalez-Levy said. “This committee will support and amplify those efforts by identifying resources, leveraging partnerships and facilitating information.”

College of Law Dean Alex Acosta explained that the TPS application process is quite detailed and it is imperative that law students and faculty who volunteer to help local Haitians fill out the paperwork have the support of fluent Creole speakers as interpreters.

“We need reliable interpretation because people’s right to obtain TPS status hangs in the balance,” Acosta said. “I’m certain that within the university community we have the people to fill this need.”

Anyone interested in volunteering may fill out the form on the FIU Hope for Haiti:Doing Our Part website. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and other members of the South Florida community are welcome.

It never hurts to try and see if they will replace it but remember a warranty is to protect you against manufacturing defects. This means the manufacturer guarantees you that if the item does not do what it is supposed to and it is because of something on their end that they will fix it.

While consumers can sometimes get a manufacturer to sometimes work with them on other issues it is really a hit and miss kind of thing. In general manufacturers and extended warranty companies will not take responsibility for damage caused because of a drop.

By Patricia Lui Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) — Asian currencies fell this week, led by South Korea’s won and the Philippine peso, on concern tighter lending controls in China will damp regional trade as worsening public finances in Greece curb demand for emerging- market assets. Investors pulled $608.5 million from funds investing in developing nations’ equities in the week ended Jan. 27, the first outflows in 12 weeks, according to EPFR Global. China’s banking regulator on Jan. 27 told banks to “reasonably control” loan growth, having earlier in the month ordered them to set aside more funds as reserves. India’s central bank yesterday lifted the cash-reserve ratio for banks by 75 basis points, more than economists forecast. “All these on-going concerns about Greece and China’s tightening are fueling risk aversion in Asian currencies,” said Joanna Tan , a regional economist at Forecast Singapore Pte. The won dropped 0.9 percent to 1,161.65 per dollar in Seoul, capping the biggest two-week slide since February, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The Philippine peso sank 0.7 percent from Jan. 22 to 46.51, while Malaysia’s ringgit lost 0.3 percent to 3.4090. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index of shares slumped 4.5 percent, its worst weekly performance in 11 months. The People’s Bank of China earlier this month increased banks’ reserve requirements for the first time since June 2008 and has also guided bill yields higher at auctions this year, helping cool lending in the world’s fastest-growing major economy. The reserve ratio may be raised again after next month’s Lunar New Year holiday, the Shanghai Securities News reported today, citing unidentified people. Greek Debt The cost of protecting Greece’s debt against default rose to a record this week after the country’s budget deficit ballooned to almost 13 percent of gross domestic product in 2009, more than four times the European Union’s limit. The European Commission said Jan. 27 that Greece hasn’t done enough to narrow the gap. “We did have a nice rally in emerging Asian stock markets since March of last year and maybe they’re due for a little correction,” said David Cohen , director of Asian forecasting at Action Economics in Singapore. “Markets have seen some fallout from the problems in Greece.” Global funds sold $478 million more Korean shares than they bought this week through yesterday, trimming net purchases for the year to $606 million. Foreigners were also net sellers of equities in India, Indonesia, Taiwan and Thailand this week, according to latest figures from their stock exchanges. Safe Havens Favored “It’s more risk aversion from equities and partly a safe-haven bid back to the dollar,” said Faizal Yussof , a currency trader at KAF Investment Bank Bhd. in Kuala Lumpur. “If China contracts, I don’t think the rest of the world has any chance to put in a good recovery.” Malaysia’s central bank said on Jan. 26 that borrowing costs cannot be kept “too low” for too long as economic growth strengthens, prompting some economists to predict it may begin raising interest rates as early as March. Policy makers need to “normalize” interest rates, central bank Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz said today. Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas on Jan. 28 raised the so- called rediscounting rate, one of the interest rates it charges lenders for borrowing money, by half a percentage point to 4 percent and announced plans to review the amount of reserves commercial banks must hold with a view to an increase. Its benchmark interest rate was kept at a record- low 4 percent for a fifth straight meeting. Monetary Tightening The Reserve Bank of India yesterday increased its cash- reserve ratio to 5.75 percent from 5 percent, more than the half-point increase forecast by all but two of the 25 economists in a Bloomberg survey. Governor Duvvuri Subbarao said India’s economic growth could “gain momentum” over the next year and “reinforce” inflationary pressures. India’s rupee slid 0.1 percent to 46.1782 this week against the dollar, marking a third straight decline. Singapore’s dollar fell 0.2 percent to S$1.4072 and Thailand’s baht dropped 0.5 percent to 33.19. Taiwan’s dollar and China’s yuan were little changed at NT$31.99 and 6.8268, respectively. Asia Currencies Have Weekly Drop, Led by Won, on Lending Curbs in China

The 24″ (23.6-inch to be precise) ViewSonic V3D241wm-LED is probably the next 3D Vision compatible display that we all are going to wait for with high hopes that it will be even better than the already available 120Hz models so far. There is still not a lot of information regarding the V3D241wm, but judging from what is known so far it will most likely be based on the same panel as Acer Aspire GD245HQ. The key difference will be the presence of a LED backlight instead of the traditional CCFL one that is found in the Acer for example and all other currently available 120Hz displays. Now the big question is what improvements will the LED backlight offer as compared to the CCFL and if that will actually bring any benefits when playing with this display in stereoscopic 3D mode? Traditionally LED backlights offer wider color gamut, better color reproduction, even backlight across the whole screen area, “blacker” black, higher contrast ratio and maybe even higher brightness. But if the panel is the same as the one used in the Acer you should not expect that much of a difference in performance between the two displays just because of the LED backlight, but since there is still some time before the ViewSonic V3D241wm-LED hits the market we better not get our hopes too high and expect it to be much better than what we already have. This way if it turns out to be really better we can be happily surprised instead of getting disappointed, which in my opinion is better. The release of the ViewSonic V3D241wm-LED is scheduled for the second quarter of the year which means it might be as early as April, so there is some time left and maybe we’ll soon have other interesting announcements from other display manufacturers…

So in a previous post I talked about ordering LED Replacement Lightbulbs for my dome lights.

I found it interesting to learn that these are called Festoon Bulbs. I don't know why I do, but I like that word.

Today, I took the 5 minutes needed and installed them. Here's what they looked like with the LED Bulb put in:

Here's what it looked like Hanging Loose:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

So, these are significantly brighter. The light is White light though not the soft yellow of a incandescent bulb. These use less energy (1 Watt as opposed to 10 Watts) and won't ever burn out or suffer from vibration.

Not sure if I like the White Light though. I have to think about that one.

That's about it.

Casey

I'm wanting to get a small LED setup going which will run all the time, even when the rig is off (if possible). It will only be like 2 or 3 LEDs and I may incorporate a switch to the circuit if I get annoyed by the 24/7 lighting.

  1. Which connection on the motherboard/power supply will I need in order to power the LEDs constantly?
  2. Which connection will I need to power the circuit, it needs to be around 9V (tested with a 9v battery)?

Please share any information you think I may need.

Thankyou in advance.

“Keith Ellison, widely hailed as America’s first Muslim congressman, could more accurately be described as CAIR and Hamas’ man in Congress. Congressman Ellison has been a regular presence at CAIR fundraisers and at pro-Hamas rallies in the United States. As a former member of Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam, Ellison has enough anti-semitic and Islamist credentials to satisfy anyone, and had expressed openly anti-semitic beliefs in the past.

Since Ellison got his start with CAIR , his attempt to provide support for Hamas is completely unsurprising. Both Hamas and CAIR are projects of the Muslim Brotherhood, which also helped birth Al Queda. Organizations like CAIR do the same work in America that Hamas does in Israel. The difference is that CAIR does its work on a political level, while Hamas functions on both a political and a military level. Like CAIR, Ellison is careful to cloak his pro-Hamas agenda, which he does by mentioning that all violence is wrong and that Israelis probably shouldn’t be shelled– but the thrust of his agenda is to force Israel to open its border with Hamas.

None of this is up till now is shocking. But what Congressman Keith Ellison accomplished was to convince 53 other Democratic congressmen to join him in this venture. It is not particularly surprising to find the House’s most radical anti-Israel voices signing their names onto Ellison’s letter. It would be inconceivable if a letter aiding Hamas did not carry the signatures of Barbara Lee, Jim Moran or Jim McDermott, who helped Ellison spearhead the whole campaign. It is essentially inconceivable that any letter circulated in congress opposing Israel would not get their signature.

“Jim Moran had managed to blame even the Iraq War on the Jews and McDermott was actually named CAIR’s Public Official of the Year. Neither is West Virginia Arab Congressman, Nick Rahall, who is the Democratic party’s version of Darrel Issa, who is tied to CAIR as well, and previously voted against Israel’s right to defend itself. Rahall is also the top recipient of CAIR donations. The likes of Diane Watson or Pete Stark aren’t complete surprises either. Pete Stark has a history of being both anti-Israel and unstable. Neither is Carolyn Kilpatrick, who voted against Israel’s right to defend itself, and against condemning terrorist attacks on Israel. Kilpatrick, like virtually every Democrat on the list, is also tied to CAIR….

“And it is instructive to note how many of the congressmen and congresswomen on the list are funded by CAIR money. Keith Ellison, John Conyers, Loretta Sanchez, Betty McCollum, Lois Capps, Bill Pascrell, Elijah Cummings, Bob Filner, Mike Honda, Barbara Lee, John Dingell, James Moran, Nick Rahall, Andre Carson, Mary Jo Kilroy, Carolyn Kilpatrick and Jim McDermott are among the top receivers of CAIR money in congress.

It is of course no surprise that this list weighs heavily toward Minnesota and Michigan, where CAIR is strong. But it also includes twelve congressmen from California, 3 from New Jersey, 4 from New York and 6 from Massachusetts. These numbers are not mere statistics, they define the rising influence of the Muslim Brotherhood on American politics, state by state….READ MORE: SULTAN KNISH

My latest adventure with the Nokia N900 has been learning how to control the Status LED on the front of the Nokia N900. The best discussion of this can be found in the thread (N900) Possible to change the colour of the notification light???.

Codemonkey listed the current set of patterns and said that adding new patterns to the list should be easy, but that getting other applications to use the new patterns might be difficult. So, I figured I would go out and add a few new patterns and see if I could get them to work.

The patterns are in the /etc/mce/mce.ini file. This is a text file you can edit with any text editor. It is suggested that you make a backup copy of the mce.ini file, which is a good idea. However, I don’t believe you can really do a lot of damage editing this file.

Editing existing patterns is relatively simple. The one thing that you need to know is that the N900 appears to use the patterns in the section, so make sure you are editing the right pattern in the right section. I did find it challenging to use multiple engines, which is what appears to be necessary to make the led flash different colors. I may come back to that again later.

Adding a new pattern requires one additional step. There is a section called which have a list of patterns. Any new pattern should be added to this semi-colon delimited list. For my purposes, the first thing I did was add the PatternExample pattern to this list so I could use it in testing. Later, I added PatternFoo for additional testing. For my purposes, I may add seven new patterns, PatternR, PatternG, PatternB, PatternRG, PatternRB, PatternBG and PatternRGB. Each of these would leave the LED on for the specified color.

The next step was to reload the patterns. I used the command

initctl stop mce; sleep 2; initctl start mce

Finally, I could test my patterns. Lifting from the script that CodeMonkey provided, I used the commands

dbus-send –system –type=method_call –dest=com.nokia.mce /com/nokia/mce/request com.nokia.mce.request.req_led_pattern_activate string:PatternExample

and

dbus-send –system –type=method_call –dest=com.nokia.mce /com/nokia/mce/request com.nokia.mce.request.req_led_pattern_deactivate string:PatternExample

to turn on and off the LED patterns. Throwing this into a shell script with appropriately placed ‘sleep’ commands, I could make an interesting set of LED display sequences.

With that, I am now thinking about different things I could do with this. For example, I probably set up dbus-scripts to make the lights do different things when various events happen on the phone. I could use this to add lights to various other scripts that I use, such as the hdr script I’ve been playing with. I could also see this as a nice addon to various games, for example a racing game where the LED goes from red to amber to green to indicate the start of the race.

So, are you doing anything interesting with the Status LED on your Nokia N900?

This is my super high power led review

I'm wanting to get a small LED setup going which will run all the time, even when the rig is off (if possible). It will only be like 2 or 3 LEDs and I may incorporate a switch to the circuit if I get annoyed by the 24/7 lighting.

  1. Which connection on the motherboard/power supply will I need in order to power the LEDs constantly?
  2. Which connection will I need to power the circuit, it needs to be around 9V (tested with a 9v battery)?

Please share any information you think I may need.

Thankyou in advance.
After extensive research and visits to video stores, we chose the 42SL90 for several reasons – stunning HD quality, LED technology, small form factor, bluetooth, and excellent price/value. We were limited in size by our entertainment center – most other 42 inch sets were too wide, but the form factor of the 42SL90 is so svelte that it fits perfectly. After comparing 40 inch sets with 42 inch sets, the extra 2 inches of real estate was quite a noticeable improvement.

The HD picture on this set is absolutely stunning, much better than our Sony LCD XBR that sits in another room. We watch the SL90 from a distance of 10 to 12 feet and the size is perfect. All the bells and whistles have so far worked flawlessly. Blu Ray, DVDs, HD Roku, and HD cable look fantastic. Standard Def is actually watchable, again better than the Sony XBR.

The set comes with two remotes – a beautiful backlit model and a simpler model with just the basic functions. The menu system is easily the best I have ever used. Very intuitive and simple to use. The picture adjustments are extremely extensive. A picture wizard is included to calibrate to your own tastes. If you can't find an optimum setting with this set, you should not be watching TV. The color accuracy appears to be spot on out of the box.

Given its thin 1.2 inch depth, the sound is better than I expected. I have yet to turn it up past the 50% volume level. Adjustments for bass, treble, and surround sound. And the Clear Voice II function works great. Hook the set up to a sound system and it really shines. The only cons so far (and we knew about these going in) – no analog audio out (optical only) and no PIP. I purchased a Gefen Dolby optical converter that allows the SL90 to work flawlessly with our legacy sound system.

Highly recommend the 42SL90. It is a stunning set to watch and easily the best looking set when turned off too. high power led
