Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day, so in addition to the green beer and cheeky pinching, if you want to try your luck with Irish cooking between now and the 17th, recipes aren't anywhere near as hard to come by as that elusive four-leaf clover.

The classic dish of St. Patty's Day is often Corned Beef & Cabbage. We'll tell you how, and even some ancient Celtic wisdom on the subject: “The secret is to cook the corned beef in the oven, and to cook the vegetables separately. That keeps them from becoming greasy.”

And if Corned Beef & Cabbage doesn't make you do a jig–or you're looking to put on a mighty big spread, how about recipes for Irish fare like Beef Braised in Guinness, Dee's Potato Bread, Colcannon, and Almond Tartlets.

Happy cooking! And, as the Irish saying goes: “As you slide down the banister of life,
May the splinters never point in the wrong direction!”

Soma

Special Operations Medical Association

Yee hah! Right in front of SFist HQ on Stillman Street in SOMA, we spotted a daredevil who said his name is Troy taking advantage of the weekend emptiness to practice some of his mad skillz on a motorcycle.

More pictures, including a portrait of the stunt artist, here.

Rusty from SomaFM writes,

“The Space Shuttle Endeavour has taken off and is in space, traveling to
the International Space Station where it will be delivering parts
including the third connecting module known as 'the Tranquility node' to
the station. It's also bringing up a seven-windowed cupola to be used as
a control room for robotics. The mission will feature three spacewalks.”

“You can hear it all mixed with electronic ambient music on SomaFM's
Mission Control channel. Just go to somafm.com and click on
Mission Control.

“The best time to tune in is around 2pm pacific time (06:00 GMT), when
the astronauts are just getting up and starting their checklists for the
day. Astronaut sleep periods are approximately from 6am pacific to 2pm
pacific. There will be minimal mission audio at that time, but the rest
of the time all sorts of stuff is going on.”

Sourse:Seafood Salad Recipe

When the American food machine turns out a new salty treat, they turn to Jeremy Selwyn for approval. Tali Yaholom on one man’s decade-long odyssey to find the perfect snack.

Jeremy Selwyn’s passion is to find every single snack in America, no matter how obscure or bizarre, and then write about his reaction. Consider this past Monday: After discovering risotto-flavored potato chips manufactured by a relatively unknown company, New York Style, Selwyn brought a bag into his office and urged his co-workers to try some. “Everybody was like, ‘What the heck is that?’” he laughed, but “as it turned out, they were pretty good.” So the chips, described as rice crackers with a Doritos-like flavor will soon become the 4,423rd on Selwyn’s 10-year-old site, Taquitos.net, a compendium of snacks that sound like salty Willie Wonka concoctions: seaweed corn crackers, octopus-flavored potato chips and peanut butter and jelly popcorn, to name a few.

Snack manufacturers will defensively tweak their recipes to satisfy Selwyn’s criticisms.

The site started as a solution to a monotonous newspaper job in central Massachusetts, where Selwyn would pass time by buying creative-sounding snacks at a local convenience store. During this time, salt and vinegar- or ketchup-flavored potato chips were “somewhat of a novelty,” and Selwyn quickly became known as the guy who eats weird junk food at 8 in the morning, which turned out well for him, as his friends and colleagues soon began bringing exotic snacks for “the chip guy” to try out. A site was born, that now attracts about 30,000 snack-happy visitors a month, according to Quantcast.

What separates Taquitos.net—named for a Trader Joe’s offering and a Simpsons joke—from most other cult food blogs is everyman appeal, its creator’s eagerness to shove a herb-roasted anchovy-flavored potato chip down his throat. “For people who are adventurous, it’s fun to try different things,” Selwyn says. “It’s fun to see something you couldn’t imagine existed and then eat it.” Selwyn, who goes by “Chief Snacks Officer” when he’s not working his day job as a Web site developer in Cambridge, Massachusetts, finds his craziest-sounding nosh when travelling abroad (England introduced him to Cajun squirrel-flavored potato chips) or visiting Asian grocery stores in Chinatown (home to all things seafood). Snack manufacturers regularly send Selwyn complimentary cases of their newest products and, occasionally, will defensively tweak their recipes to satisfy Selwyn’s criticisms—such was the case of a certain caramel popcorn, which Selwyn complained left too much sugar on his hands.

• Watch: 12 Banned Super Bowl Ads Selwyn is careful not to brand himself as any sort of culinary expert, though his site reflects the national obsession with snacking in general, and extreme snacking in particular. “Personally, I have kind of no actual background in food preparation or food science,” he says. “I’m a terrible cook. I really just eat these things as an ordinary snacker and I’m surprised by the number of people who read my reviews who say, ‘You had that one right on,' which isn’t to say everyone agrees with me or I want everyone to agree with me, but I call it as I see it and I’m just aiming at ordinary snackers.”

There is a “sub-industry trying to crusade against snacking,” he adds, but “people are going to eat what they want to eat” and, regardless, “more and more people are willing to experiment.”

Plus, there’s room for the foodie elite to participate, since snack manufacturers often try recipes incorporating gourmet trends and exotic foreign foods. “It’s whatever the flavors are of the moment tend to get integrated into snacks, whether it’s some ethnic combination or a spice or a food like bacon,” adds Ed Levine, founder of Serious Eats. “When big snack food companies are fighting for shelf space, one way you battle for shelf space is by broadening your line.”

It was a few years ago when I was introduced to the wonder that is the Pio Pio sauce. A Peruvian restaurant in New York City, Pio Pio serves juicy, affordable rotisserie chicken. But it was the vibrant green dipping sauce that I became addicted to.

I interrogated the waitstaff at almost every Pio Pio location to know the contents of this spicy sauce. The only consistent answer? That no answer was the same.

Jalapeños and mayo. No, no, aji chiles, cilantro and oil. I had to face the reality that either no one knew what was in the sauce, the ingredients were top-secret, or both.

Light green, medium-hot, creamy, salty, tangy and oh-so-addictive, it seems that every Peruvian restaurant has its own secret recipe for this mysterious condiment. An internet search for “Peruvian sauce” tells the story of dozens of people anxious to know how to make the sauce for themselves. Helpful bloggers post their recipes on message boards.

One says the secret is a head of lettuce, one swears the sauce cannot be made without evaporated milk, and several point to Peruvian black mint as the key ingredient.

I tried many, many recipes to come close to the magic of Pio Pio's sauce, none of which hit the mark. Finally, I brought a container from the restaurant into work, hoping someone else could reverse-engineer the ingredients. My obsession, along with my frustration, was building, and I needed a slight break from the sauce that taunted me.

Chile Pepper Editor-in-Chief Laura Dankowski took on the challenge, blending my scattered notes from past trials, along with her own hunch of what she tasted. We decided both jalapeños and aji paste (usually found in the Mexican section of grocery stores) were a must, and Laura hit on the addition of cheese, which added the necessary touch of saltiness. It's not exact—but pretty darn close.

At Pio Pio, the dip garnishes rotisserie chicken, crunchy-fried seafood platters and salchipapa, an unusual but delicious combination of deep-fried potatoes and sliced hot dogs. But I use the sauce for anything in the place of salsa, whether topping a burger, garnishing a breakfast burrito, or spreading on a piece of fish.

And I'm just glad I can finally stop harassing the Pio Pio employees for the recipe and make it on my own.

ways to lose weight

February 10th, 2010

Losing weight is such a big hurdle for one to take.

For some it can cause a fortune, like of those going to gastric bypass that is very common these days.

But, why do we have to spend thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars just to shed off pounds and save our lives, when that stage or situation can actually be prevented. It's just a matter of us being seriously responsible to ourselves.

Both men and women's metabolism slows down as we age and this one thing that people who are in the mid-ages has to accept. Meaning, when one reaches the ages 30, it's most likely to see stomach fats (beer bellies) start to build up on men and on us women, it will be our arms, thighs, belly, buttocks and stomach too. And, these days, weight problems are also very common to teens, the young generations.

Indeed, there are countless of desperate people from young to old, who are in desparately in search for a weight-loss program that is proven to be effective and apparently choosing one is actually as hard as losing weight too.

There are tons and tons of bogus dietary plans and weight loss programs plaguing on the internet and the television that has no proven results to show and guaranty consumer.

What one has to know is that regardless of what plans or programs you would get into, the “real key” to a successful weight loss is within you, within yourselves. Set your goal, keep focus and be a winner!

Below are my 10 best ways to lose weight and be healthy all the way:

1. No to Salt and Sugar;

2. No to Oily, Fried or Fatty Foods;

3. No to Carbonated Drinks and Alcohol;

4. No to Junk Foods too;

5. No to Rice and other bad carbs on the evenings;

6. Yes to lean Meats and steam fishes on Lunches;

7. Yes to lots of Veggies and Fruits

8. Yes to More Cereals, Grains and Nuts;

9. Yes to 8 Glass of Water or more; and,

10.Yes to daily Exercise!

These 10 simple ways are very realistic and attainable.

Normally on holidays, especially from Thanksgiving until New year is done, it's so hard to keep on track of our weight because of the celebrations or festivity and food is simply just everywhere. That's when we should double our efforts to make ourselves active, to sweat and burn calories. Cardio exercises are highly complementing.

I discourage usage of diet pills and diet teas too, just to suppress hunger and boost energy drives. For most of those diet pills have so much caffeine and all others contents that can seriously harm one's liver and with the diet teas, those are not safe either, for they contain senna leaves; a strong laxative leaf that can badly damage the human intestine. So, stay away from those.

For those who can afford, it will be best to seek your physician's advice on your health condition and your desire to be healthy. In that way, you won't put your life in danger.

Nevertheless, nothing is still better than doing things naturally. It's safe, less expensive and risk free.

Just maintain discipline, keep focus, never give up and be fat free!

Health Fitness Tips: Road to proper health and fitness with tips and information by healthfitnesstip.com

People rag on Kathy Griffin, but I admire her spunk and willingness to put herself out there. She’s honest and fearless and while she can definitely be obnoxious there’s something admirable about her. I love people with big personalities who aren’t afraid to talk smack.

Kathy was a nominee at the Grammy Awards for Best Comedy Album for “Suckin’ It For The Holidays.” (She lost to Steven Colbert for “A Colbert Christmas.”) While she was on the red carpet talking to E!’s Guiliana Rancic, she revealed the secret to her hot body at 49:

Kathy Griffin may have had a nose job, lipo and an addiction to diet pills, but at the Grammys she maintained that her breasts are her own.

“They’re real, I’m not doing the Montag,” she said when Giuliana Rancic commented on her cleavage. “My body is slammin.”

“How are you getting this body?” asked Giuliana.

“It’s frustration and starvation,” said Kathy. “I’m cranky all the time and I’m hungry all the time.

“You look good, that’s all that matters,” said Giuliana.

Ryan Seacrest later commented that Kathy and Giuliana are looking more and more like sisters.

[From The Huffington Post]

On one hand I like that Kathy admits that it’s not easy to stay thin and that she’s hungry often. (Which reminds me of a comment that Julianne Moore once made that she was hungry all the time when she was dieting.) On the other hand it’s irresponsible to chalk her body up to “starvation” because it encourages crash dieting, which is not effective, comfortable or healthy. There are much better ways to lose weight and to make sure you’re getting enough to eat without going hungry. (I recommend Body for Life, Eat to Live, and Weight Watchers as sensible plans that have worked for me at various points.)

There’s some debate going on in the comments at the Huffington Post as to whether Kathy’s boobs are real or not. I figure that she’s copped to so much other plastic surgery that she’d admit it if she had a boob job. There’s a lot you can do with inserts and pushup bras. It’s still not all “natural,” but it’s not like you’ve had surgery.

Kathy was looking decidedly cat-like in some promotional appearances for her book right before the holidays. I checked and while she may have had some work done she’s also suffered from botched lasik eye surgery that significantly altered the shape of her eyelid, making it look raised. It looks like it’s settled by now anyway.

In other news about the abrasive comedienne, Griffin denied that she’s banned from CNN after dropping the F-bomb – again – during the live New Year’s Eve broadcast with silver fox Anderson Cooper. She also said that she went out for lunch with Cooper’s famous well-heeled mom, Gloria Vanderbilt, shortly afterwards.

weight loss programs

Below is a transcript of "The Jay Leno Show" opening monologue from January 21st:

Thank you for coming on such a miserable, rainy day. For those of you watching at home, to give you an idea what the weather is like here, it's almost as gloomy outside NBC as it is inside NBC.

I don't think people in L.A. have seen this much water since Octomom gave birth.

You know it hailed in Los Angeles. Hail! People here thought it was raining crack! They didn't know what it is.

In fact, it has been so cold and rainy here in Los Angeles birds have stayed in their birdhouses all day just Tweeted each other. That's how bad.

In political news… the big upset. A Republican was elected to the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts – filling the seat once held by Ted Kennedy. This could "tip" that delicate balance of power in the U.S. Senate from completely incompetent back to morally corrupt. You don't know which way it's going to go.

Did you know Scott Brown posed naked for Cosmo back when he was a law student? Posed naked! Back then GOP stood for "Grand Ol Package." It was a whole different thing.

It's Thursday, January 21st, or as John Edwards calls it, Father's Day.

John Edwards has finally admitted he is the father of Reille Hunter's baby. He issued a statement. Who was that statement for? The only person who doesn't know he's the father of Reille Hunter's baby is Reille Hunter's baby. The baby is the only one who doesn't know.

That's pretty sleazy. According to Edward's former aid Andrew Young says in an upcoming interview that Edwards asked him to steal a diaper from the baby so he could do a DNA test. Apparently the test showed that both the diaper and John Edwards was full of crap.

Folks, it's time once again for "How long will it take?" You know what is going to happen. You know it's coming. The question is, "How long will it take?" (Drop-in; Guys sliding on a frozen ping pong table/last guy falls.) A couple of guys and a ping pong table. That's pretty good. That's a little shaky. Let's see what happens with the third guy… There you go.

Here is something fascinating. Researchers in Germany have discovered that monkeys can do simple math. Their brains are actually hardwired for simple math – not complex math like humans can grasp. For example, moneys could never run up a trillion dollar national debt. Moneys are smart enough to pay their bills at the end of the month and not spend more until they have money.

A number of states have set up programs for people to dispose of unused prescriptions. They're trying to discourage people from flushing drugs down the toilet, because the drugs are turning up in drinking water. I don't know what's more disturbing, the fact that drugs are ending up in our drinking water or that flushed toilets are ending up in our drinking water. I don't know which one is more disgusting.

Starbucks announced this week that they are raising their prices. Who can blame them? Have you seen the cost of hot water these days? Come on.

A new weight loss study out this week shows that the more complex the diet plan the sooner people will go off it. Do you think that has anything to do with it? How complex the plan is? Think about it. The reason they came out with these complex plans is because people couldn't follow the simple plan: "Stop Eating!"

Federal officials are now accusing two truck drivers of stealing over $200,000 worth of Red Bull energy drinks from a Naval facility in Tennessee. Police pulled them over doing 95 MPH and they were on foot.

In Chicago, an off duty policeman had his nipple bitten off by a man when he attempted to stop a fight. The police officer said he was glad the guy wasn't a dwarf.

Tiger Woods is reportedly in sex rehab down in Mississippi. they said Tiger is staying in an exclusive sex rehab clinic, in a private suite, where he gets maid service. You know who I feel sorry for at this sex clinic? The maid. Think how unattractive you must have to be when you go in for that job… "Nobody is going to hit on you. You can start tomorrow." See what I'm saying…

Sex rehab is a little different down in Mississippi. What they do there is just keep showing you scenes from "Deliverance" over and over again. That will cure you.

Just weeks away from the Olympics. NBC has been running promo after promo. Here's the latest one. These are so inspiring. (Drop-in: Olympic hockey promo/hockey player knocks other team player down.)

Is it me or are the women on "The Bachelor" starting to get a little testy. Did you see the other night? That one woman got so jealous. She just took it a little too far. Take one look. (Drop in-Bachelor helicopter ride/blonde woman shoots it down.)

Here is something historic. The Shady Lady brother in Nevada has the first legal male prostitute in America. Now ladies, if you are interested in going to the male prostitute, we have his prices for you. For $50 he will talk dirty to you. For $100 he will have sex with you… And for $200 he will listen to you! At least half the crowd liked it.

Twenty-eight years ago this week the Camcorder was invented and twenty-eight years ago today was the first guy who said, "Honey, of course I'm not going to show it to anybody. This is just for us."

This was my fifth year at the World Economic Forum. Over that time, I've come to think of it as a buffet of issues. Whatever the theme, the biggest challenge isn't finding something you like, but learning how to select from the huge number of offerings effectively. Like all buffets, the things that are most filling are usually served first. Everyone knows that if you go into a buffet without a strategy, you'll end up stuffed instead of sated. With experience, one learns to get the most out of what's offered and not fill up too soon.

Davos is a unique gathering in the sense that business leaders from around the world attend, yet they spend almost none of their time making deals. We know we can't give money to solve the complex, important issues if we don't make money. But we also know that companies that do good, do well.

I've learned that even as we're talking about global issues, you can't solve problems unless you start locally and take personal responsibility. In adherence to that notion, I've chosen to focus on two topics that are tied to Tupperware's corporate mission and can really change the world. My main course, if you will.

The first is the health implications of chronic disease. Of course, diseases like malaria and AIDS are horrific, and I applaud the heroic efforts being made to fight them. But most people who die unnecessarily are suffering from chronic diseases — heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer. In many cases, these diseases could be avoided, or at least mitigated, with a focus on diet, exercise and smoking cessation.

Things like diet and exercise may sound like personal issues, and in some ways, they are. But they also have a huge impact on the global economy. And while businesses can't force people to trade in their overstuffed sandwiches for salads, they can put employees in a position where it's easier for them to make smart choices.

At Tupperware, we've done this by building a new fitness center, offering personal training sessions, and banning smoking on company property. We have Weight Watchers sessions on the corporate campus, host a TupperFit Weight Loss Challenge, and offer “Hold the Stuffing,” a program that makes people aware of portion sizes during the holiday season.

The investments we've made in these programs have paid off multiple times over by reducing absenteeism and health care costs. I believe they've added years to some people's lives, not to mention the camaraderie and team spirit that has been generated.

My other area of focus relates to women and girls. Gender parity is the broad topic, but I've chosen to really drill down on the way women and girls are treated in developing countries. Many of these countries' traditional belief systems hold that boys are assets and girls are burdens. With the scarce resources available, girls and women continue to lose their fight for relevance.

Yet it's exactly these women and girls who can lead these countries out of poverty. Women are much more likely to think “we” instead of “me.” That explains why studies show that when women in developing countries earn money, they are far more likely to spend it on their families, while men are more likely to spend it on themselves. It's these investments women are making in the next generation that ultimately will pay the greatest dividends.

Even broken down into smaller bites, chronic disease and the fate of women in developing nations are epic issues. But separate them from the far larger issues of global health and gender parity and they at least seem manageable and surmountable.

Businesses can play a big role by supporting women and developing corporate health initiatives. But individuals must play a role too. I encourage everyone to visit Kiva (www.kiva.org), a good example of an organization that allows people to make micro loans, and see how you can help a female entrepreneur in a troubled country support her family.

Back home, see if you can encourage even one friend to exercise more or stop smoking. A small amount of money, effort or caring can make a real difference.

Serotonin-Plus Weight Loss Patient by Waverly Weight Loss

There is certainly no shortage of weight loss programs out there today. But how do you know which one is right for you. Just because it worked for Jenny McCarthy or Kirstie Alley doesn't mean it will work for you. Also, can you really afford the price of them? Let's look at some of the more popular weight loss programs out there.

Jenny Craig – www.jennycraig.com
The price per week for Jenny Craig depends on how much weight you want to lose. The membership fee can range from $20-$399. The price for food a week is $100. You get prepackaged meals for the week. If you join the Jenny Direct at home, you will also have to pay extra for the shipping of the food to your house. If you join a local center and go and get your food every week, there is no extra costs. With the membership fee you also receive one-on-one consultations with their professional consultants. Several times Jenny Craig will runs specials and have a free 30 day trial(not including the food). My opinion is that this is a very expensive program, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose. You are also not eating “real” food and will not be able to afford buying their food for the rest of your life. If you really think this will work, then you should try it, but if you aren't completely sold on it, I would look elsewhere.

Weight Watchers – www.weightwatchers.com
The cost of weight watchers depends on what program you are choosing. If you are only choosing to become a member online it is $5 a week for the first 3 months and $17 for every additional month. If you want to go to a local center and attend meetings you will pay an additional $10-$13 per week. Weight watchers lets you choose the food you want to eat. The give you the instructions on what is healthy and you get to choose the food that is allowed for you on your diet. Their websites give you free recipes and lets you chat with other members. Many times weight watchers will have a free one week trial. I know several people that have lost a great deal of weight with weight watchers and kept it off. They said that they were able to learn the tools to healthy eating. I believe that weight watchers is worth the money.

Nutrisystem – www.nutrisystem.com
Nutrisystem is a meal delivery plan. It costs $75 for the food when you sign up for automatic delivery. The shipping and membership is free. Prepackaged meals are delivered to your house and you are able to eat 3 meals a day and then have healthy snacks, such as fruit in between. You also get unlimited online support services. If you would rather not have automatic delivery, you will pay an extra 10%. plus the cost of shipping for the food. Many times nutrisystem offers 2 weeks of meals free when you sign up for the automatic delivery option. It seems like there are a lot of celebrities that have followed nutrisystem. Marie Osmond and Tori Spelling are the latest celebrities to endorse nutrisystem. They also offer different programs for woman and males and for older-aged people. In my opinion, if you can afford nutrisystem, then go for it. It is not cheap, but is supposed to teach you what a real portion looks like. Many people stay on nutrisystem even after they lose the weight, so they will not gain it back.

Zone Diet (Chef's Diet) – www.chefsdiet.com
The chef's diet follows the zone diet. It is $280 for delivery of fresh meals or $175 for the frozen meals. The meals are based on a 40:30:30 ratio of carbs, protein, and fat. If you do not live in Los Angeles or New York, you will have to also pay shipping for the food. There are several celebrities, such as Fergie and Ali Laundry that follow this diet. In my opinion, this diet is very expensive and unaffordable by everyday people. You are better off buying the Zone Diet book by Dr. Sears and making your own food. If you are that pressed for time and can't make your own food and you are single and have the extra money, then maybe you should consider this meal plan option.

Breast cancer is a malignant or cancerous tumor that starts from cells of the breast. It is the most common cancer among women and is the second leading cause of cancer in its group. The disease has surpassed lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide and is the cause for more than 400,000 deaths per year (Opatt, sec.1). Women have a 1 in 8 chance of getting the disease within their lifetime. Men can also develop breast cancer, but this is fairly rare (Libby Ross Foundation, 2006).

There are several different types of breast cancer. The most common types include ductal carcinoma in situ, lobular carcinoma in situ, invasive ductal carcinoma, and invasive lobular carcinoma. Ductal carcinoma in situ is early stage breast cancer. The term ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS, refers to abnormal cells that are present in the lining of a milk duct, but have not invaded the surrounding breast tissue. Nearly all the women diagnosed with DCIS are successfully treated, leaving no affect to their lifespan. Lobular carcinoma in situ, or LCIS, is present when abnormal cells are found within a lobule of the breast, but have not invaded the surrounding tissue of the breast. It is unknown in the medical community whether or not LCIS is an early form of breast cancer or if it is just a marker for the future development of cancer. Experts do agree, however, that women who have LCIS are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer. Invasive ductal carcinoma, or IDC, accounts for the majority of invasive breast cancers. IDC occurs when cancerous cells form in the lining of the milk duct and eventually break free of the ductal wall invading the surrounding breast tissue. The cancer cells may remain localized but can spread farther throughout the body. Invasive lobular carcinoma, or ILC, is similar to invasive ductal carcinoma. ILC begins in the milk-producing lobule and then invades the surrounding tissues throughout the breast. Like IDC, ILC can also spread to other parts of the body. Invasive ductal carcinoma is harder to detect by touch and is less likely to appear on a mammogram (Mayo Clinic, 2005).

Many factors can influence a woman's risk of getting breast cancer. If a woman has one or more of the risk factors associated with breast cancer it does not necessarily mean that they will get the disease. Some women may have one or more breast cancer risk factors but may never develop the disease, while the majority of women who actually have breast cancer have no apparent risk factors (Imaginis, para.1). The biggest and most obvious risk factor for acquiring breast cancer is gender because the disease occurs mostly in women (Buechler, p. 2). Hormones are said to play a major role in the etiology of breast cancer. The most recognized risk factors associated with hormones include having a late menopause, being after the age of 55; early menarche, being before the age of 12; and becoming pregnant with a fist child after the age of 30. A woman's family history of breast cancer is also a very important risk factor for the disease. Having blood-related relatives with breast cancer on either side of the family increases the risk of acquiring the disease drastically. A woman whose mother, sister, or daughter has breast cancer has a doubled risk of getting the disease. Women who have had breast cancer in only one breast are three to four times more likely to develop breast cancer in the other breast. Dietary factors are also thought to have a major influence on the risk of developing breast cancer. The incidence of breast cancer is more in high in areas with high fat diets, like the United State, than it is in areas with low-fat diets, like Japan. The combination of reduced intake of whole grain products plus increased animal fat and protein is thought to increase the risk for breast cancer (Denton, p.1). The use of alcohol has also proven to increase the chances of getting breast cancer. The risk increases depending on how much alcohol is consumed. Women who consume two to five alcoholic beverages per day are about one and a half times more likely to develop breast cancer then that of a nondrinker. Consuming one alcoholic drink per day slightly increases the risk (Buechler, p. 2).

Signs and symptoms of breast cancer vary with each patient. Many patients never experience any symptoms because most breast cancers are discovered before symptoms are ever present. Signs of breast cancer may be that of a lump in the armpit or above the collarbone that does not go away. Possible symptoms of breast cancer include bloody discharge from only one of the breast, nipple inversion, or any kind of changes in the skin over the breasts including puckering, redness, and texture changes. A doctor should further evaluate any person experiencing signs or symptoms of breast cancer as soon as possible (Buechler, p. 3).

It is very important that a woman is familiar with the symptoms associated with breast cancer because early detection and treatment can significantly increase a patient's chance for recovery. There is a 95% survival rate for women who are treated quickly and proactively (Henderson, para. 2). Breast cancer can be detected early by having regular breast exams as well as yearly mammograms. Mammography is an x-ray examination of the breast and has the ability to detect a very small cancer in the breast. This procedure is very valuable as it may detect the cancer long before it may be felt by a breast examination. Dr. Edward White states that 85% to 90% of all breast cancers are detectable by mammography and that early detection by mammography has reduced the mortality rate from breast cancer by 20% to 30% in women who are 50 years old and older. A normal mammography does not exclude the possibility of breast cancer because some breast cancers are not visible on mammography. Physical examinations of the breast are important because the cancers that are not seen on the mammography can usually be felt by a physical examination of the breast. Visual examination as well as examination by palpating is also important for catching breast cancer. These exams can be done during a routine checkup and should also be done by the woman on a monthly basis (White, p. 4).

Surgery is the best option for treating breast cancer. Which type of surgery to be done is based on several factors, including how big or small the tumor is, where the tumor is located, the type of tumor, the patient's overall health as well as their personal wishes. Surgery options include having a lumpectomy, the removal of the cancerous tissue and a surrounding area of normal tissue; simple mastectomy, removal of the entire breast but no other structures; modified simple mastectomy, removal of the breast and the axillary lymph nodes; or a radical mastectomy, removal of the breast and the underlying chest wall muscles, as well as the underarm contents. Many women chose to also have radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and or hormonal therapy in addition to having surgery. Radiation therapy kills off any tumor cells that may still be present after surgery and is used most often on women who have had a lumpectomy. There are three different types of chemotherapy strategies that may be used. These include adjuvant chemotherapy, presurgical chemotherapy, and therapeutic chemotherapy. Adjuvant chemotherapy is given to people who have had curative treatment for their breast cancer. It is given to reduce the possibility that the cancer will return. Presurgical chemotherapy increases the chances for surgery getting rid of the cancer completely by shrinking large tumors and or killing any stray cancer cells. Therapeutic chemotherapy is administered to women whose breast cancer has spread throughout other places of the body. Hormonal therapy is used because breast cancers are frequently sensitive to changes in hormones. It may be given to prevent recurrence of a tumor or for the treatment of an existing disease. The drug Nolvadex is the most commonly prescribed hormone treatment being used as treatment for breast cancer as well as for prevention (Buechler, p. 6-7).

Death rates from breast cancer have been continuously declining since 1990 because of improved screening and awareness of breast cancer as well as advances in therapy. It is so important for women to have regular screenings for breast cancer and perform monthly self-breast examinations because breast cancer is such a treatable disease especially when it is treated early.

Kamagra

Even though I don't have any problem with erectile dysfunction (ED), I was curious about Viagra, as I imagine most men are. So, I decided to see if I could get some and give it a try; these are my experiences.

Since I wasn't really in the mood to try asking a doctor in person for a prescription for Viagra, I thought I would try ordering it online. If you actually bring this up with your doctor you may be requested to try a penile cuff first to confirm that you have an erectile problem. This is basically a small Velcro cuff that is put loosely on your penis before you go to sleep. Since men typically experience several erections at night while sleeping, your penis will expand and partly separate the cuff. Having erections at night would tend to show that the problem was perhaps more psychological than physical. However, the technical definition of an adequate erection is 80% of normal firmness and most doctors would not be able to determine this. Even most urologists would be unable to measure actual erectile firmness. They too would tend to simply go by anecdotal information from the patient about ability to achieve erection and difficulty with penetration caused by lack of firmness. In cases where ED is caused by damage to the internal pudendal artery or by poor blood circulation drugs like Viagra may not help. However, there is some encouraging information that Viagra can help when the problem is caused by trauma to the cavernous nerves such as from surgery for prostate cancer.

Since I didn't want to discuss this with a doctor in person I did searches on the internet to find an online source that would sell Viagra. I found a place in the US that would sell online. I had to fill out a brief questionnaire along with the information for the tentative order. Naturally, I fibbed a bit and said that I had erectile problems when, of course, I don't. Sure enough, my description was accepted and a doctor on their end wrote a prescription to allow them to fill the order. The process is pretty simple but it is not exactly cheap. The pills cost quite a bit apiece and there is the shipping charge along with an extra fee for the prescription to fill the order. Since Viagra is a prescription drug they won't fill the order without a prescription. Ten tablets of 100mg Viagra typically costs a minimum of $70 so $7 per pill. You can get a better price if you buy 30 pills for $140 which would be $4.67 per pill. However, there will also be shipping charges plus an additional fee to have the doctor on their end write the prescription. The doctor's fee will bring the price up to at least $5 per pill.

So, I wondered about the generic brands of Viagra. Naturally, the maker of real Viagra gives all sorts of dire warnings about obtaining anything but 100% patented Viagra. However, I knew that several big drug companies in India make a large number of US drugs under license and these are considered exactly the same as the US versions. So, it seemed reasonable to me that if these companies could make so many other drugs to full FDA specifications that they could probably handle generic sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra. I did some research online and found out that generic Viagra is sold in India under the brand names Silagra, Kamagra, Edegra, Zenegra, and Caverta. I was concerned that a foreign online ordering site might just be a scam like the Nigerian scams I receive almost daily. Recently, I even filled out a form online for a free eBay wholesalers kit. They then called me and told me that they were ready to ship it right out just as soon as I paid the $1.85 shipping charge. Naturally, I wasn't about to give credit card or banking information to someone who called me so I had to pass on their offer. Likewise, if you get emails that talk about low prices for Viagra don't order anything from them. You can't really trust a spammer. However, I had no trouble doing a search and finding places online that sell these Indian brands. The process was quite similar to the US order: fill out an even briefer questionnaire and make an order. The overseas orders have shipping charges but don't seem to charge a doctors fee. The big difference is that these Indian brands cost about one third of what real Viagra costs. Since the prescription for my genuine Viagra was for 100mg tablets I ordered the same thing in the other brands. Typical prices I've seen for generic Viagra for 30 100mg tablets is $60 or $2 per pill. I ordered Silagra and one of the other brands and some sildenafil citrate Soft-Tabs which are supposed to dissolve more quickly.

Just like my US order, all of my overseas orders arrived with the correct number of tablets and there were no phantom charges on my credit card. So there was no obvious attempt to rip me off. However, that still left the question of whether the Indian brands were really the same as genuine Viagra. The Sildenafil and the Soft-Tabs both came in individually sealed blister packs the way that most over-the-counter gel tabs are sold. However, the other brand simply came loose in a ziplock bag. This did seem a little unprofessional, however, it did occur to me that the capped plastic pharmacy bottle that my US order came in probably didn't protect the pills anymore than the sealed ziplock bag. Now with genuine Viagra I had something to compare the generics with. It was time to try the genuine Viagra and see what it did if anything.

Since I don't actually have any erectile problems and I, in fact, have a much higher than average libido I did wonder if I would notice anything from the Viagra. However, I can now safely say that even without ED, it definitely had an effect on me. It seems to take the pills at least half an hour to start working for me and they seem to last about five hours. I've seen it suggested that it can take an hour to start working and perhaps it would right after eating. There were noticeable sideffects. The side effects for me included a feeling of having the blood rush to my head. This gave me a small headache and gave me a feeling of pressure in my throat. It also had the odd side effect of making the light look more blue. Also, with only slight exertion I would get red in the face. However, the intended effect was there as well. Viagra won't just give you an erection; you still have to be aroused in some way for that to happen. However, I noticed that it took less arousal to give me an erection; I definitely got an erection more quickly than typical. Also, after reaching orgasm, I was able to get another erection more quickly than typical. So, in terms of the effect it seemed to give me erections more quickly and to allow quicker recovery. The side effects are not that pleasant but I knew after the first test to take some pain reliever before taking the Viagra. However, you should eat some saltines or drink some milk to keep your stomach from being upset. Since these are 100mg tablets you can also try cutting these in half and see if 50mgs has enough effect. This would reduce the side effects to some extent and if 50mgs isn't enough taking the second half will give the full effect in another 30 minutes. Sadly, the 50mg tablets are not half the price of the 100mg so it still makes sense to buy 100mg tablets and a good pill cutter even if 50mgs works for you. Pill cutters typically use a razor blade to make the cut so handle with care. Also, after the pill is cut you definitely need to store the unused half in a sealed container.

So, I then tried each of the other three generic brands that I had bought. Unlike the dire warnings from the Real Viagra website (which I've included as a link) I have to say that all of the generics that I tried worked, including the ones that came loose in a ziplock bag. There was no difference between the generics and the genuine Viagra that I could detect. They all seemed to have exactly the same erectile effect and the same side effects. The Soft-Tabs weren't really worth the extra price since even though they dissolve more quickly, they still take about the same amount of time to take effect. I suppose if it weren't illegal to obtain drugs from overseas sources, I would certainly consider the Indian generics since they seem to basically be the same as real Viagra. In particular, the packaging on the Silagra was very professional. The tablets are individually sealed and the foil is printed with the active ingredient, sildenafil citrate and the dosage. It contains the manufacturer's name and address and when the tablets were packed along with the expiration date. The foil package also contains consumer warning information like not to take more than 4 pills a day. What is particularly interesting though is that all of the printed information is in English. This seems to suggest that the factory always intended to sell the product in English speaking countries. For example, I would bet that Silagra is considered a normal brand in both Australia and Canada and probably England as well. Nevertheless, Silagra is currently illegal to important into the US. Naturally, any version of Viagra will contain sildenafil citrate and will have the same warnings and precautions as real Viagra. These warnings and precautions can be seen on the Viagra website which I've linked to.

orlistat

Obesity has become an epidemic, especially in the United States of America. Many people have been asking for a miracle drug which would promise to help lose weight. In a way, Xenical (Orlistat) has become just that. Xenical (Orlistat) is prescribed to help others lose weight, and it's usually paired with a low-calorie diet. Xenical (Orlistat) is also very helpful in maintaining your new and 'improved' body for a long time after you have lost the weight. One of the nice benefits concerning Xenical (Orlistat) is that it can be used in patients who have problems such as high cholesterol, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Xenical (Orlistat) is a lipase inhibitor. This means that it works on your intestinal system. It is here where it blocks thirty percent of the fat from being absorbed into your system. The rest is excreted out the rectum with your fecal matter…and straight in the toilet where it deserves to go!

Xenical (Orlistat) is taken orally three times a day with each main course which contains a high amount of fat. It is recommended that Xenical (Orlistat) be taken during or up to one hour after a meal. You do not have to take Xenical (Orlistat) if your meal is very light and not abundant in fatty substances. If you're a patient who is allergic to Orlistat, or who has ever suffered from anorexia, bulimia, gallstones, thyroid disease, diabetes, malabsorption syndrome (problems absorbing your food), or if you're taking any blood thinners, alert your doctor immediately. Xenical (Orlistat) may react negatively in your body otherwise.

If your doctor has provided a diet program for you, it's extremely important that you follow it for best results. It's no use to take a pill that removes thirty percent of your fat intake when you're making it up with extra food with extra fat at every meal. The more fat a meal contains, the more side effects you will experience with Xenical (Orlistat). Since Xenical (Orlistat) blocks your body's ability to use fat-soluble vitamins efficiently, it's important to take a multi-vitamin to make sure that you're absorbing all the nutrients that your body needs. When taking the multi-vitamin, make sure to take it two hours before or two hours after taking your Xenical (Orlistat), or better yet, take it when you're going to bed to avoid any interactions with Xenical (Orlistat). If you forget to take a dose of Xenical (Orlistat), take it as soon as you remember unless it's been more than an hour since you last ate a meal. Otherwise, it would not be effective at all. Never take a double dose at one time to make up for the one you missed. This is very unwise and can result in unpleasant and embarrassing side effects.

The side effects from taking Xenical (Orlistat) mostly involve those that are intestinally related. You will definitely notice a change in your bowel movements after taking Xenical (Orlistat). You may also experience unexpected spotting which tends to be very oily. You'll probably notice an urgent need to use the restroom, and even uncontrollable flatulence! You should also be aware that Xenical (Orlistat) can cause irregular menstrual cycles, as well as orange/brown colored feces. If you experience any itching, skin redness, hives, swelling, chest pains, breathing difficulties, or fever, contact you doctor immediately. These signs indicate an allergic reaction to Xenical (Orlistat), and the problem must be taken care of as soon as possible.

Always keep Xenical (Orlistat) out if the reach of children and sunlight, and keep it tightly closed at all times. Also, remember to keep it away from damp places, such as restrooms. Otherwise, the potency of Xenical (Orlistat) may be lessened. If you notice that your Xenical (Orlistat) is expired, or if you do not need it anymore, throw any excess medication away. Do not share it with family and friends. A prescription is for you and you alone. If you do otherwise, it would be considered a breach regarding the law, and you may have to pay consequences for such an action. Remember that part of losing weight is losing calories. Add regular physical activity in your life while taking Xenical (Orlistat) to enhance the weight losing process. Walk your dog, take a job, or even ride a bicycle at a leisurely pace. Never over-exert yourself, and always take Xenical (Orlistat) responsibly. It's not a miracle pill, but a huge aid to your diet and maybe it's the boost that you always needed to help jump start your fitness and wellness program.

Alli is here! by laurasmoncur

Low-Carb Diet May Be Better At Reducing Blood Pressure than Weight-Loss Drugs

Durham, NC, United States (AHN) – A low-carbohydrate diet showed to be more effective in lowering blood pressure than a popular weight-loss drug, according to Veterans Affairs and Duke University health researchers.

Lead author Dr. William S. Yancy, Jr. said in a statement that the findings show that for those with high blood pressure and a weight problem, a low-carb diet may be more effective in lowering hypertension than taking drugs like orlistat, which is now sold over-the-counter.

The researchers also said pursuing weight-loss through diet may pose less side effects than taking medication. Participants in the study who either took orlistat or adopted a low-carbohydrate diet lost an average of 10 percent of their body fat.

Yancy said the study was one of the first to pit the benefits of diet alone against taking weight-loss drugs. Previous studies have shown that a combination of prescription-strength orlistat, a low-carbohydrate and a low-fat diet is an effective method of losing weight.

The study appears in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The Food and Drug Administration has warned shoppers to be on the lookout for counterfeit versions of the weight-loss drug Alli. The real version of Alli contains orlistat, a drug with side effects that include “an urgent need to defecate,” as those with delicate sensibilities like to put it. The fakes are made with sibutramine, a controlled substance that has been linked to high blood pressure in some studies.

According to the FDA, the counterfeit version of the GlaxoSmithKline drug “looks similar to the authentic product, with a few notable differences.”

The counterfeit Alli has:

  • Outer cardboard packaging missing a “Lot” code;
  • Expiration date that includes the month, day, and year (e.g., 06162010); authentic Alli expiration date includes only the month and year (e.g.,: 05/12);
  • Packaging in a plastic bottle that has a slightly taller and wider cap with coarser ribbing than the genuine product;
  • Plain foil inner safety seal under the plastic cap without any printed words; the authentic product seal is printed with “SEALED for YOUR PROTECTION”;
  • Contains larger capsules with a white powder, instead of small white pellets.

The FDA also warns that “sibutramine is a drug that should not be used in certain patient populations or without physician oversight. Sibutramine can also interact in a harmful way with other medications the consumer may be taking.”

If you think you have fake Alli, you can contact the FDA's Office of Criminal Investigations by calling 800-551-3989 or by visiting the OCI Web site. If you have the real stuff, you don't have to contact the FDA, but you may want to stock up on Depends.
